Okay, so, I’ve been meaning to get back into tennis, and I finally took the plunge today at the Winchester Indoor Lawn Tennis Center. Let me tell you, it was quite the experience.
First off, finding an indoor court around here that’s open when I can actually make it is a real mission. I looked at a bunch of places. The Woburn Racquet Club, Lexington Tennis Club, you name it, I checked them out. But Winchester Indoor just seemed like the best fit for me. They’ve got 14 indoor courts, which is crazy. Plus, they have leagues for both adults and kids, and lessons too, which is perfect since I’m rusty as hell.
I called them up this morning to check availability, and they managed to slot me in for a court this afternoon. Getting there was easy. I just followed the map, found the place, and parked. No hassle at all. It’s cool that they have directions and contact info readily available. Makes life easier, you know?

Walking in, the place felt pretty welcoming. It’s a no-frills kind of spot, but clean and well-maintained. There was a notice board showing the rules, like wearing the right shoes – gotta have those smooth-sole tennis shoes, apparently. And you can only use a maximum of six balls on the court. Good to know, right? They’re open from 8:00 a.m. most days until dusk, which is pretty standard.
Getting on the court
- Hitting the court: I was excited, to say the least. The indoor setup is great because you don’t have to worry about the weather messing up your game. I mean, playing outdoors is fun and all, but wind and rain can really throw you off.
- Finding a partner: I went solo this time, but they have all sorts of leagues – North Shore Tennis League, Central Mass Indoor Tennis League, even the Dorothy Bruno Hills Tennis League. They also have working women’s and mixed doubles on weekends. So many options to find people to play with! I definitely want to check out those leagues later, once I get my groove back.
- My rusty skills: Let’s just say my backhand needs a lot of work. But hey, that’s what the lessons are for, right? They offer group and private lessons. I’m thinking of signing up for a few private ones to get some personalized coaching.
Overall, it was a solid first experience back on the court. I got a good workout, and it was just plain fun. I’m definitely going back, maybe even this weekend. I might even explore some of the other tennis places around here eventually, just to see what’s out there. But for now, Winchester Indoor Tennis is my go-to spot.
Oh, and one more thing! I noticed they were talking about other tennis courts and even tournaments in Winchester, both public and private. They even mentioned parks and schools with courts. It seems like Winchester is a pretty tennis-friendly town. I might try to find some outdoor courts when the weather gets nicer.
Anyway, that’s my tennis adventure for today. If you’re in the Winchester area and looking for a place to play, give Winchester Indoor Lawn Tennis Center a shot. You might just see me there, struggling with my backhand!
