Okay, so today I wanted to share my experience with something called a “urinalysis complete with reflex to culture.” Sounds fancy, huh? But it’s really just a pee test, but a bit more involved. I wasn’t feeling too hot, you know, that feeling like maybe you’re getting a UTI? So I went to see my doctor, and this is what happened.
Went to the Doctor
First, I went to the doctor and told her about my symptoms. She listened carefully and then said, “Sounds like we need to do a urinalysis.” I was like, “Sure, whatever you think is best.”
Pee in a Cup
So, the nurse handed me a sterile cup and showed me to the bathroom. I’ve done this a million times, so I knew the drill. You gotta pee a little first, then catch the rest in the cup. They call it a “clean catch” – it’s supposed to keep the sample from getting contaminated with germs from your skin.

Waiting Game
After I gave them my sample, it was just a waiting game. I sat in the waiting room for a bit, reading some old magazines. Then, the nurse called me back in.
Initial Results
The doctor came in and said they had some initial results. She explained that the first part of the test is just looking at the pee – the color, how clear it is, and stuff like that. They also use these little dipsticks that can detect things like blood, sugar, and other stuff that shouldn’t be there. My pee looked a little cloudy and the dipstick showed some signs that could mean an infection.
Reflex to Culture
Here’s where the “reflex to culture” part comes in. Because my initial test showed some red flags, they automatically did the second part, which is the culture. The doctor explained that they would take a small sample of my urine and put it in a special dish to see if any bacteria would grow. This helps them figure out exactly what kind of bacteria is causing the problem, if any, and which antibiotic would work best.
Got the Results
I had to wait a couple of days for the culture results. But when I finally got them, it turned out I did have a UTI. The doctor prescribed me some antibiotics based on the type of bacteria they found in the culture.
Feeling Better
After taking the antibiotics for a few days, I started feeling much better. The burning was gone, and I didn’t feel like I had to pee every five minutes. It was such a relief! The test did its job.
So, that’s my story about my urinalysis with reflex to culture. It’s not the most exciting thing in the world, but it’s important to get these things checked out if you’re not feeling well. Hope this was helpful to someone out there!
