Okay, so I’ve always wanted a bit of greenery indoors, and I heard about these black olive trees. They look super cool, so I thought, “Why not?” I decided to get one and see if I could keep it alive inside my house. It wasn’t just a spur-of-the-moment thing; I did a little bit of reading up first to make sure I wasn’t getting in over my head.
First off, I went to a local nursery. I figured they’d have a decent selection and maybe someone who knew what they were talking about. I found a few black olive trees, and they were all different sizes. I picked out one that wasn’t too huge but still had a nice shape. It was about four feet tall, I guess. The guy at the nursery told me a bit about them, like how much light they need and stuff. He made it sound pretty simple.
Then I had to find a good spot for it in my house. I knew it needed a lot of light, so I put it near the big window in my living room. That window gets sunlight almost all day, so I figured it was the best spot. I also made sure it wasn’t too close to the air vent, because I didn’t want it getting blasted with hot or cold air all the time.
Next up was the pot. The one it came in was okay, but I wanted something that looked nicer in my living room. I ended up getting a ceramic pot that was a bit bigger than the old one, so the tree would have room to grow. I also got some potting soil that the nursery guy recommended.
Repotting was a bit of a mess. I laid down some newspaper on the floor and carefully took the tree out of its old pot. I loosened up the roots a bit, and then put it in the new pot with the fresh soil. I made sure to pack the soil in nicely around the roots.
Watering was the next thing to figure out. I didn’t want to overwater it, but I also didn’t want it to dry out. I started by watering it once a week, and I would stick my finger in the soil to see if it was dry. If it was, I’d water it. If not, I’d wait a bit longer.
It’s been a few months now, and the tree is actually doing pretty well! It’s even grown a little bit. Here are the things that I think really helped:
- Lots of light: That spot by the window is perfect.
- Good pot: The new pot gives it room to breathe.
- Not overwatering: I think I’ve got the watering schedule down now.
- Occasionally turning it: This helps it grow evenly since the light comes from one side.
My little experiment is a success!
My black olive tree is a happy camper, and I’m pretty happy with myself for not killing it. It looks great in my living room, and it’s nice to have a bit of nature inside. If you’re thinking about getting one, I’d say go for it! Just do a little research first, and you should be fine.
