Alright, so I stumbled upon this thing called “Best American Short Stories 2022.” Sounds fancy, right? I figured I’d dive in and see what the fuss was all about. I started by checking out when it was going to come out. Turns out, it was released on November 1st.
Next, I wanted to know what was actually in this thing. Apparently, it’s a collection of 20 short stories, hand-picked by some guy named Andrew Sean Greer. He’s the guest editor, and from what I gathered, he’s a pretty big deal, a Pulitzer Prize winner. The series editor is Heidi Pitlor, someone I have never heard of before today.
So, what did I do with this information? Well, I dug around a bit more to learn about these editors. I tried to find the whole list of stories in the collection.

- Started looking up Andrew Sean Greer. Found out he wrote that book, “Less.”
- Searched for reviews of the collection. Not a lot out there yet since it was pretty new.
- Looked for places I could get my hands on this book. You know, the usual spots.
Figuring Out What To Do Next
At this point, I had a decent idea of what this “Best American Short Stories 2022” was all about. But I wanted to see if it was worth the read. I mean, 20 stories is a lot, and I don’t want to waste my time, you know?
So, I decided to look up some of the authors of the individual stories. See if I recognized any names or if their other works seemed interesting. I read a couple of interviews with Andrew Sean Greer to get his take on why he chose these particular stories.
Finally, after all that digging, I decided to give it a shot. I ordered the book. I read through it over the next couple of weeks, taking my time with each story. Some I liked, some I didn’t, but that’s how it goes, right?
