Okay, so, like, I’ve been getting into bourbon lately. Not in a bad way! Just curious, you know? I figured I’d share my little journey into what they call “bourbon culture,” ’cause why not?
First off, I had to figure out what the heck bourbon even is. I mean, I’ve seen it in movies, all those cool guys drinking it neat. I grabbed a bottle – didn’t even know what to look for, to be honest. Just something that looked kinda fancy, but not too expensive.
Then I started, you know, tasting it. At first, it was kinda rough. Strong stuff, man! But then I started noticing things. Like, it’s kinda sweet, right? But also oaky, ’cause they age it in these charred oak barrels. It is neat.

I also try to learn something about it online. Like, did you know there are rules about what makes bourbon, bourbon? It’s gotta be made in the US, mostly corn, aged in those special barrels, and all that jazz. Who knew, right?
Trying Different Kinds
- First try – It was a total shot in the dark. I went to the store and picked a bottle based on the look. It was a bit expensive, but I wanted to feel fancy.
- Second try – After reading some stuff online, I tried to find one that was described as “smooth” and “caramel-y.” It was better.
- Third try – I asked a friend who knows about this stuff, and he suggested a “high-rye” bourbon. It was spicier, which was interesting.
I’m still learning, obviously. But that’s the fun part, right? Exploring and figuring out what you like. I even tried making an Old Fashioned, felt like a real bartender for a minute there, haha.
What I’ve Learned So Far
- Bourbon is not just a drink, it’s a whole thing. There’s history and craft and all that.
- Tasting is an adventure. At first, it all tastes the same, but then you start picking up on the little differences.
- There’s a lot to learn about how it’s made and the different types. It’s a rabbit hole, but a fun one.
- Cocktails are a whole other world. I’m just starting, but it’s cool to see how bourbon can be mixed with other stuff.
So, yeah, that’s my little bourbon adventure so far. It’s been fun. And I get it now, why people are into this stuff. It’s not just about the alcohol, it is about the whole experience. I’m still a newbie for sure, but I am enjoying the ride.
