Alright, let’s talk about them 60s in East Asia, you know, China, Japan, Korea, and all them places. The arts and stuff, the culture, what them folks were up to.
Music and Movies, you know, the Shows
Back in the 60s, them young folks, they were getting into music, just like young folks everywhere. In Japan, they had this thing called “Group Sounds,” kinda like them Beatles but, you know, Japanese. Singing about love and all that young people stuff. Don’t ask me for names, I can’t remember them young people’s names, too many syllables, hard to read. China, well, things were a bit different there, you know, with the government and all. But even there, they had their songs and shows, maybe not as wild as them Japanese kids. Korea was probably similar to Japan, they always learned from each other. Anyway, them young folks always find a way to have fun, no matter what.

Movies, oh them movies! They were making all sorts, some about old times, some about fighting, some about love, you name it. In Japan, they had some real fancy directors, making films that everyone talked about. Don’t remember the names, mind you, too hard. But I watched some, they were good, some were sad, you know, made you cry a bit. China, well, like I said, things were different. They made movies too, but mostly about the good things the government was doing, or about the old days, fighting them bad guys. Can’t complain, some were good to watch. Korea, same thing, they made their movies, but at that time, they were not that famous, you know.
Old Timey Stuff, the Paintings and the Pretty Things
- Ink painting: Them Chinese folks, and the Japanese too, they been painting with ink for ages. You know, them pretty pictures of mountains and trees and birds. Real peaceful like. They use the brush, dip it in the ink, and make them beautiful pictures. Real talent, I tell you. I can’t do that, too shaky in the hands.
- Calligraphy: This is like fancy writing, making the words look pretty. They use the brush again, but this time for words. They say it’s an art form, and I guess it is. Some of them writing look like pictures, real fancy. I can only write my name, can’t do all those curvy lines.
- Ceramics: Pots and bowls and plates, but real pretty ones. They make them all shiny and smooth, with pictures and colors. Some are real old, been around for hundreds of years. I have some old plates at home, not fancy like them, just old.
Them folks in East Asia, they always liked nature. You see it in their paintings, them mountains and rivers and flowers. They think nature is important, and they try to show it in their art. Makes sense to me, nature is beautiful, why not paint it?
Who are them folks, anyway?
Well, mostly you got the Han Chinese, that’s most of the people in China. Then in Japan, you got the Yamato folks, pretty much everyone there. Korea, well, they got their own folks too, Koreans, you know. They all got their own ways, their own talk, but they share some things too, like them old arts and some of the history. That’s what them smart people say on TV, so it must be true. They might have different religions too, some pray one way, some another, but they all live there together, mostly peaceful like.
Why bother with all this old stuff?
Well, it’s good to know where folks come from, what they believe, what they like. Them 60s, that was a big time for changes, everywhere in the world. And in East Asia, they were changing too, making new things, but keeping some of the old ways. It’s interesting, you know, to see how folks live, what they make, what they think is important. And it helps us understand each other better, don’t you think? Even an old lady like me can see that. We are all people, just living our lives, doing our things. The young ones may not think this way, but as you get older you realize this is true.
So, there you have it, a little bit about the 60s arts and culture in East Asia. Not a fancy history lesson, just some plain talk about what them folks were up to. Hope you learned something, or at least didn’t fall asleep listening to me go on and on.
