This here H Mart in Little Ferry, it’s a place I go to all the time. It’s where you get all them Asian foods, you know? They got everything. I tell ya, that place, it’s somethin’ else. Reminds me of the big market back home, only this one’s got stuff from all over Asia, not just our little village.
Now, this H Mart, it ain’t just any old grocery store. They got this thing called a food court. It’s like a bunch of little kitchens all crammed together, each sellin’ somethin’ different. You ever seen anythin’ like it? Lord have mercy, first time I saw it, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.
- First off, they got this place sellin’ Korean food. Spicy stuff, mostly. But good! Real good. You can get that kimchi, the spicy cabbage, and that bulgogi, that’s like barbecued beef.
- Then there’s another stand, sells noodles. All kinds of noodles. Thick ones, thin ones, some in soup, some fried up.
- And don’t even get me started on the dumplings! Oh, them dumplings… I could eat a whole plate of ’em, easy.
This H Mart in Little Ferry, it’s on Bergen Turnpike. Big road, lots of cars. But they got plenty of parkin’, so that ain’t a problem. You can find all sorts of good things there, not just food.

This H Mart, it started a long time ago. Back in 1982, or somethin’ like that. Started small, just a little store some fella from Korea opened up. Now it’s all over the place. That’s what they tell me, anyhow. This one in Little Ferry, it’s big. Real big. Lots of aisles, lots of stuff. This Korean guy, Il Yeon Kwon, that’s the fella who started it all, I reckon. Smart man, I tell ya.
They call it “H Mart” ’cause of some Korean words, “Han Ah Reum,” somethin’ like that. Don’t rightly know what it means, but it sounds fancy, don’t it? This place, it ain’t like your regular supermarket. They got all the Asian food you could ever want. And some other stuff too, regular groceries, like milk and bread. But mostly, it’s the Asian stuff that folks come for.
I went there the other day, needed to get some things. Saw a bunch of folks in the food court, eatin’ and laughin’. Looked like they was havin’ a good time. This H Mart, it’s a good place. Good place to get your food, good place to see folks. They got food from all over – Korea, China, Japan, you name it. They even got some American food, but who wants that when you can get all this other good stuff?
They got these little restaurants inside, right there in the store. You can get a whole meal there. I saw one fella eatin’ a big bowl of somethin’ that looked mighty tasty. Think it was some kinda soup. He was slurpin’ it down like there was no tomorrow. That food court has a lot to choose from. They got different stands for the different kinds of Asian food. There are lots of choices. You can find something that you like, easy.
If you’re ever in Little Ferry, you gotta check out this H Mart. It’s somethin’ to see. And if you like Asian food, well, you’ll be in hog heaven. Just don’t go on an empty stomach, or you’ll end up buyin’ the whole store!
- They got all sorts of stuff in there, not just food. They got dishes, and pots and pans, and all kinds of things you need for your kitchen.
- They even got some of them little trinkets, you know, like them lucky cats. I always wanted one of them.
- You can spend a whole day in there, just lookin’ around. It’s that big.
I remember the first time I went to that H Mart food court. My eyes near popped outta my head! So many different things to eat. It was a real treat, let me tell you. The prices are pretty good too. It’s not too expensive.
One time, I saw this young lady, she was buyin’ a whole bunch of stuff. Looked like she was havin’ a party or somethin’. She had all kinds of goodies in her cart. I asked her what she was makin’, and she told me all about it. Sounded mighty delicious. I’ll tell you, people get real creative with this Asian food.
