Well, let me tell you, you won’t believe what I saw on the picture box the other day! They got these high schools now, they ain’t like the ones we had back in my day. No siree! These ones, they got something called a… a “food court.” Food court in high school! Can you imagine?
Back when I was a young’un, we was lucky to get a bit of mystery meat and some lumpy mashed taters. And we ate it, and we liked it! Didn’t have no choices. Now, these young’uns today, they got all sorts of fancy things in these food courts. It’s like a darn restaurant in there, I tell ya!
They got, what do they call it… “serving lines.” Yeah, serving lines to make sure all them kids can get their food fast. Gotta keep ’em movin’, I reckon. Wouldn’t want ’em to be late for class, would we? Hee hee! They gotta move fast in high school.
Now this here food court, it ain’t just for show. It is for lunch, you know, the most important meal for all them growing kids. But it’s like a big ol’ buffet. They got pizza, they got burgers, they got them little chicken nuggets that my grandkids are always hollerin’ about. And get this, they even got salads! Salads in a school! Who ever heard of such a thing? It is just like a big food court in high school.
I saw one, on that picture box, big as a barn. They said it was one of them “Allen High School.” Biggest school in the whole darn country, they said. Or maybe it was Texas. Big state, Texas. Anyways, that school, it was HUGE. And the food court? Even huger! They gotta feed all them kids, you see. Big school, big cafeteria. That’s what they call it, cafeteria. Sounds like a germ or something to me but that’s what they call it.
- Pizza
- Burgers
- Chicken Nuggets
- Salads
- And a whole lot more, I bet!
And you know what else they said? They got rules about what they can serve these kids. Something called… “National School Lunch Program.” Sounds important. Gotta make sure them kids are eatin’ right, I guess. Can’t just be feedin’ ’em junk all day. Even though, if you ask me, some of that junk food sure does taste good. Remember them little Debbie cakes?
I guess they even got folks givin’ them ideas on what to cook in them food courts. Recipe suggestions, they call it. Smart folks figuring out how to feed a whole army of teenagers. ‘Cause that’s what it is, ain’t it? A whole army of hungry teenagers in these big high schools.
And it ain’t cheap, neither. Gotta have money to run a big operation like that. They got a word for it, “budget.” Yeah, gotta budget for all that food. And they gotta make sure they ain’t losin’ money. Gotta be “financially responsible,” they say. Sounds like a whole lot of work to me, just to feed some kids lunch. But I guess it is important.
It is all just so different these days. I mean a food court in high school, who would have thunk it. They say Eagle Stadium can seat 18. Whatever that means. It is just all beyond me. I am glad my school days are over. They were simpler times.
They even got food trucks now, rollin’ right up to the school. Imagine that! Food on wheels. We used to have a fella come around sellin’ ice cream from a cart, but that was about it. Now they got whole kitchens on wheels. I do not know how many students are in that Allen High School but it must be a lot. They got so many options for them.
I reckon these young’uns today, they got it pretty good. Plenty of food to choose from, all sorts of fancy things. Maybe too many choices, if you ask me. Makes it hard to decide. But hey, at least they ain’t eatin’ mystery meat every day.
Well, I’ve talked your ear off long enough. Just had to share about these crazy food courts they got in schools now. It’s a whole different world, I tell ya. A whole different world. But I am sure of one thing, lunch time is still the best time of the day. You just cannot beat a good meal, no matter how old you are or how big your school is.
