Well now, listen up, y’all. You wanna make some money off them trees on your Michigan land? I’m gonna tell ya how, no fancy talk, just plain sense.
First off, you gotta figure out what kinda trees you got. Some trees is worth more than others, ya know? Oak and maple, them’s good money trees. Pine too, but not as much. If you got a bunch of scrubby stuff, well, that ain’t worth much, but we’ll get to that later.
Now, you can’t just go choppin’ everything down, that ain’t right. You gotta be smart about it. Think of it like this, you got a chicken coop, you don’t kill all the chickens at once, right? You take a few here and there, let the others keep layin’ eggs. Same with trees. Take a few big ones, leave the little ones to grow. That’s what them smart folks call “sustainable” somethin’ or other.

- Sellin’ Logs: This is the big money maker. If you got them big, straight trees, them loggers will pay good money for ’em. But you gotta watch them loggers, they’ll try to cheat ya if you ain’t careful. Get a few bids, don’t just take the first offer. And make sure they clean up after themselves, don’t want your land looking like a tornado went through it.
- Firewood: Now, if you got smaller trees, or crooked ones that ain’t good for logs, you can sell ’em for firewood. Lots of folks burn wood to heat their homes, especially up here in Michigan where it gets cold as a witch’s you-know-what. You can cut it yourself and sell it by the cord, or you can let folks come and cut it themselves, pay you by the tree. That way you don’t gotta do all the work.
- Clearing Land for Others: Maybe somebody wants to build a house or a barn, and they need the land cleared. You can charge ’em to take them trees down. It’s hard work, but it pays. And if you’re lucky you can sell the logs and the firewood too, that’s what I call killin’ two birds with one stone.
Now, about them scrubby trees and brush. You might not make much money sellin’ them, but you can still get rid of ’em. Sometimes folks want land cleared for pasture or for plantin’ crops. They might pay you a little somethin’ to clear it, or you can let people take the wood for free just to get it outta there. Some folks even let people cut firewood for free to get the land cleared faster.
And listen, be careful out there in them woods. Trees can be dangerous, they can fall on you and squish you flat. Make sure you know what you’re doin’, or get somebody who does. And don’t go cuttin’ down trees you ain’t supposed to, that’ll get you in trouble with the law. And remember, always tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back, just in case somethin’ happens.
Another thing, if you got a lot of land, you might think about sellin’ some of it. Land is valuable, and if you don’t need it all, you can get a good price for it. But don’t be in a hurry, and don’t let nobody lowball you. Get a good realtor who knows the area and knows what your land is worth. They can help you get the most money for your property. And if the land has trees on it, it’s worth even more especially if you have some of them good loggin’ trees.
So, there ya have it, a few ways to make some money off them trees. It ain’t rocket science, just good common sense. And always remember, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Don’t get greedy, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. That’s how you make a living in this world, one step at a time. You just gotta be smart, work hard, and treat folks fair. And don’t forget to keep an eye on them city slickers, they’ll try to take advantage of ya if they think you’re a dumb old… well, you know.
And one last thing, if you can plant some new trees after you cut some down. It’s good for the land and for the future. You might not see the benefit, but your kids or grandkids will. It’s like putting money in the bank for them, only it’s trees instead of dollars.
