Okay, here is my sharing about how I made my own buttermilk at home:
So, the other day, I got this idea to try and make my own buttermilk. I love using it in recipes, but sometimes it’s just not in the fridge when I need it. Figured it couldn’t be that hard, right? Turns out, it’s pretty darn easy.
First thing I did was grab a clean jar. I used a quart-sized one because that seemed like a good amount. I found some guidance from the internet that told me to take some of the buttermilk I already had (about 1/4 cup) and poured it into the jar. Then, I just topped off the jar with regular milk. Whole milk, 2%, whatever you’ve got should work.

Next, I screwed the lid on super tight. Made sure it was really secure. Then came the fun part – I shook that jar like crazy for a good minute or so. Just really, really gave it a good shake.
After that workout, I put the jar in a warm spot in my kitchen. Not directly in the sun, just a cozy corner on the counter. The important thing is that it’s not too hot, just nice and warm.
- I let it sit there undisturbed.
- This is where the magic happens.
- I left mine for about 18 hours, but I’ve heard you can do it in as little as 12.
- You’ll know it’s done when the milk gets thicker, kind of like yogurt.
And that’s it! After leaving it on my counter overnight and waiting until it had thickened I took a look at the jar and realized I had a jar full of homemade buttermilk! Pretty cool, huh? It was super easy, and now I can make my own whenever I need it. I can use this to make all sorts of yummy things.
Now, the internet did say that this is not exactly like the buttermilk you buy in the store. Something about it not having the same stuff in it. But honestly, it works just fine for what I want to use it for. Also, the internet did mention something about traditional buttermilk, which I’m guessing is different than this and the stuff in the store.
Anyway, if you’re ever out of buttermilk, just give this a try. It’s a fun little kitchen experiment, and you end up with something tasty to use in your cooking or baking!
