Amon Drake, he come to this fancy academy in the big ol’ capital with his head full of dreams. Amonith Academy, they call it, and folks say it’s all high and mighty, full of smart folk and teachers who done spent their lives studyin’ and teachin’. Amon figured he’d be makin’ a name for himself here, ya know, startin’ fresh in this big place. But let me tell ya, things ain’t as rosy as he thought.

First day, he gets there, and what he hears? Well, Amon ain’t ready for it. Someone up and says, “Ain’t ya heard? This place might go belly up any day now.” Bankruptcy, they called it. Now, that ain’t no good word for a place that’s supposed to be all high and mighty, is it? Poor Amon, he thought he’d be settlin’ into a life full of honor and glory, but right away he’s knee-deep in a mess he didn’t see comin’.
So now he’s sittin’ there thinkin’—what’s a fella like him supposed to do? Folks there got the airs, actin’ all snooty, like they’re better than him, but even they seem worried ’bout what’s comin’. Some of ’em whisperin’ about leavin’ or findin’ better spots, and some just pretendin’ everything’s fine.
He soon finds out the head of the academy’s got troubles of his own. Seems like there’s all sorts of debt hangin’ over their heads, like storm clouds ready to rain down on ’em. And it don’t help that some folks there ain’t too keen on sharin’ the load. Some folks is real secretive, keepin’ things close to their chest, while others is tryin’ to cut deals on the side, keepin’ themselves safe while others might be left holdin’ the bag.
Now Amon, he’s got a choice to make. He could try to save this place, maybe find a way to keep it all standin’. Or he could take the advice he done heard on day one: ruin it. Bring the whole academy down and be free of the mess he walked into. But there’s always a catch, ain’t there?
See, Amon ain’t exactly heartless, even if he is tired of the fancy airs and the big-talkin’ folks. Deep down, he’s thinkin’, maybe he can find a way to save it all, make it into somethin’ that ain’t built on lies and big promises they can’t keep. But doin’ that ain’t easy, not with all these folks just lookin’ out for themselves.
- First, he figures he’ll need to get to know folks better, see who’s worth trustin’ and who’s just out for their own skin.
- Next, he’s got to sniff out them backdoor deals and try to set things right, maybe even call out some big-wigs who think they’re untouchable.
- Last, but not least, Amon has to decide if he’s willin’ to risk his own neck for this place. Might be better for him just to cut loose and find a spot that ain’t in such a state, but he’s never been one to walk away from a challenge.
And that’s the trouble, ain’t it? If Amon chooses to stay and fight, he could end up sinkin’ right along with the academy. But if he turns his back now, he might never know if he could’ve been the one to save it. It’s a real hard call, and Amon’s just one fella in a place full of folks that seem set on bringin’ each other down rather than workin’ together.
But ya know, some part of Amon, it just can’t help but feel he was meant to be here, in this big ol’ mess of an academy, for somethin’ bigger. Maybe he ain’t the hero type, but he sure ain’t the quittin’ type either. So he’s thinkin’ real hard about how to start fixin’ things, one step at a time. He starts watchin’ folks, seein’ who’s sneaky, who’s honest, and who’s just plain scared. And through all that, he gets this feelin’ that maybe, just maybe, he can turn things ’round.
Only time will tell if Amon Drake’s dream is the thing that saves this academy or the thing that finally brings it to ruin. But one thing’s for sure—he ain’t done yet. Chapter 7 just shows him takin’ that first hard step, choosin’ to stay when most folks would’ve cut and run. And that, well, that’s sayin’ somethin’.
