Okay, so I’ve been seeing tri-tip roasts on sale lately and I’ve always loved them grilled. But, it’s getting colder, and I was wondering… could I just chuck it in the slow cooker? I decided to give it a shot and see what happens.
Getting Started
First, I grabbed a decent-sized tri-tip, about 2.5 pounds. I also got some basic stuff:
- Beef broth – I went with low sodium.
- Onion – Just a regular yellow one, chopped up.
- Garlic – Because, garlic. I used like 4 cloves, minced.
- Seasoning- Salt, pepper, paprika, dried oregano.
The Experiment
I started by seasoning the tri-tip all over. Don’t be shy with the salt and pepper!

Sear the tri-tip,I heated up a little oil in a pan on the stove and seared the tri-tip on all sides. Just a few minutes per side, to get a nice brown crust going.I put my slow cooker.
Then, I threw the chopped onion and minced garlic into the slow cooker. I poured in enough beef broth to almost cover the roast – maybe about 3 cups?
Waiting Game
I set the slow cooker to low and… waited. I figured it would take a while, so I just let it do its thing.I cook about 6 hours.
The Result
After about 6 hours, I checked the tri-tip with a fork, and it was super tender! It practically fell apart. I took it out of the slow cooker and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing * I was surprised,It was juicy, flavorful, and so easy!
So, to answer the question, yes, you absolutely can cook a tri-tip roast in a crock pot! It might not have that smoky grilled flavor, but it’s a fantastic option for a hands-off, tender, and delicious meal. I’ll definitely be doing this again.
