I’ve got this book called “The Best American Short Stories” sitting on my shelf, and I finally picked it up to give it a go. It’s the 2023 edition, edited by Heidi Pitlor, who’s apparently the series editor, and another author named Min Jin Lee. From what I gathered, this book’s got 20 short stories that are supposed to be some of the best of the year.
So, I cracked it open, not really knowing what to expect. The first thing I did was skim through the table of contents. I saw some names I recognized, like, I think I saw Raymond Carver in there, though that might be from a different edition. Anyway, it looked like a good mix of authors I’ve heard of and some new ones, which is cool.
Dive into the Stories
I decided to start with the first story in the book. I won’t bore you with every detail, but I spent the next few days just reading a story or two whenever I had some downtime. Some of them really grabbed me. Like, there was this one about a guy who’s, like, a tourist in his own hometown. It’s weird, but it got me thinking about how we take things for granted.

- Reading and Reflecting: I spent a good chunk of time just reading and letting the stories sink in. Some were easy reads, others I had to read twice to really get what was going on.
- Taking Notes: I started jotting down some notes about the stories I liked the most. Nothing fancy, just stuff like what I thought the story was about, or if a particular line stuck with me. I’m not much of a writer, but it helped me remember what I was reading.
- Looking Up Authors: For the stories I really dug, I did a quick search on the authors. It’s always interesting to see what else they’ve written. Found a couple of other books I might check out later.
Wrap Up
After a couple of weeks, I finally finished the book. Honestly, it was a bit of a mixed bag. There were some stories that I thought were just okay, but then there were others that were really good. Like, top-notch stuff. I even found myself thinking about them days later.
I guess that’s the beauty of short stories, right? You get all these different perspectives and styles packed into one book. And even the ones that didn’t totally click with me still had something to offer. Plus, it’s a good way to discover new authors without committing to a whole novel.
Overall, I’d say giving “The Best American Short Stories” a read was worth it. It’s not every day you get to experience so many different worlds in such a short amount of time. If you’re into short stories, or even if you’re just looking for something different to read, I’d say give it a shot. You might just find your next favorite author in there. It made me think that even ordinary life can be pretty special, you know? These stories, they’re like little windows into different lives, and they remind you that everyone’s got their own thing going on.
