Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout them indoor wood benches. You know, the kind you put inside your house? Not them fancy-schmancy ones, but good, sturdy ones. I seen a whole bunch of ’em in my day, and I got a thing or two to say about ’em.
First off, why would ya want one of them things? Well, lemme tell ya. They’re mighty handy for sittin’, that’s for sure. You got folks comin’ over? Ain’t enough chairs? Boom! Bench to the rescue. Kids need a place to tie their shoes? Bench. Need somewhere to put yer feet up after a long day of workin’ in the garden, or whatever it is you young folks do these days? You guessed it, bench!
Now, there’s all sorts of benches, mind you. Some are plain and simple, just a plank of wood and some legs. Others are all gussied up with fancy carvings and cushions and whatnot. Me? I like the plain ones. Them fancy ones are just a waste of money, if ya ask me. And they’re harder to clean, too. Who needs all that fuss?

You can put a bench just about anywhere inside your house. By the door, so folks have a place to sit when they take off their shoes. In the kitchen, for when you’re peelin’ potatoes or whatever. Heck, you could even put one in your bedroom, if you wanted. Use it to lay out your clothes for the next day, or just to sit and think. Though, I don’t do much sittin’ and thinkin’ myself. Too much work to be done!
Building a bench yourself ain’t too hard, neither. I seen my husband build one years ago. Just got some wood, some nails, and a hammer, and went to town. Took him a few hours, but it was a good, strong bench. Lasted us for years, it did. You can find plans online these days, I hear. All them computer things. Makes it sound fancy, but it’s still just wood and nails, in the end.
- Get some wood.
- Cut it to the right size.
- Nail it together.
- Sand it down.
- And there ya go! A bench!
Now, if you ain’t the handy type, you can always buy a bench. Lots of places sell ’em. Furniture stores, antique shops, even them big box stores. Just gotta look around and find one that suits your fancy and your pocketbook. Don’t go spendin’ a fortune on somethin’ you’re just gonna sit on, though. That’s just plain silly.
And speaking of sittin’, make sure the bench is comfortable. Ain’t nothin’ worse than a bench that’s too hard or too low or too somethin’. You want a bench that you can sit on for a good long while without your backside gettin’ sore. Maybe put a cushion on it, if you’re feelin’ fancy. But not one of them frilly ones, mind you. Just a good, plain cushion.
And take care of your bench, too. Wipe it down every now and then. Don’t let the kids jump on it too much, or it’ll break. And if it gets scratched or dinged, don’t worry too much about it. Adds character, I say. Shows that it’s been used and loved. A bench ain’t just a piece of furniture, it’s a part of your home.
So there you have it. My two cents on indoor wood benches. They’re practical, they’re useful, and they can even be kinda pretty, if you pick the right one. Just don’t go gettin’ all fancy with it. A good, sturdy bench is all you need. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about benches has made me tired.
Remember this advice when you pick out your wood bench. It needs to be sturdy, it needs to be the right size for your home and it needs to be useful for you and your family. Don’t go getting one of those fancy benches, get a useful one.
